PhD Course Atmospheres of Mobilities

October 4-6 2021, Aalborg University

Course description

Across disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, human geography, architecture, urban design and many more awareness of the role of atmosphere and ambiance has been rising over the last decade. In this three-day course we invite PhD students within these fields and disciplines (as well as related ones) to join us in reflecting on the relation between atmospheres and mobilities. The so-called ‘mobilities turn’ has drawn attention to the significance of mobilities and immobilities of people, vehicles, goods, and data in order to make sense of an interconnected world in constant motion. The spaces, sites, architectures, infrastructures, and technologies of mobilites all present unique and meaningful atmospheres ripe for analysis and intervention. The course will focus on how to think about mobility atmospheres on three levels:

  1. Thinking Atmospheres of Mobilities (lectures and readings on theorizing/framing/conceptualizing atmospheres)
  2. Capturing Atmospheres of Mobilities (lectures and readings on methods and empirical fieldwork approaches)
  3. Doing Atmospheres of Mobilities (workshop assignment where the participants must propose an ‘atmospheric’ Mobilities intervention or experiment in relation to a given empirical case)

The course will be a mix of lectures, student presentations, workshops and plenary discussions. Active participation is a condition for passing the course. There is a moderate amount of readings that is expected to be read before the course. The course is open to anyone with a Master within a relevant academic program.

Learning Objectives

Participants must be able to orient themselves within the presented state-of-the-art research literature in atmospheres of mobilities. They must furthermore be able to reflect upon their own PhD project in the light of this research, and in particular be able to apply theories and methods presented as well as to discuss an experiment or intervention in the light hereof.
